Spaying

Spaying refers to the surgical procedure performed on female dogs, cats, rabbits and other pets to render them infertile. There are many benefits to spaying your female companion. First, you will contribute to the prevention of pet overpopulation. Second, spaying will eliminate the sometimes ‘messy’ heat cycles that attract male dogs to your house from miles away. Third, you will help prevent diseases in your pet such as pyometra (infection in the uterus) and mammary and uterine cancer.

Spaying involves surgical removal of both ovaries and the uterus. It can be performed utilizing a number of anesthetics, monitoring devices and pain control options. At Harbor Animal Hospital we recommend pre-operative blood testing, intra-operative intravenous fluids, and we use cardiac, respiratory, pulse oximeter, CO2 and blood pressure monitors to help ensure your pet’s safety. We also tailor our anesthetic and pain control protocols for each individual pet. We strive to stay current on the latest advancements in multi-modal pain control so we can keep your pet as comfortable as possible. If you are shopping around for a competitive price on this procedure, be sure to question what type of anesthesia, monitoring equipment and pain control will be used. Please call or visit our facility to learn more about our spaying procedures.
