Senior Pet Wellness

Is your pet over 7 years old?

Did you know that in human years that is the equivalent of 55 years for large dogs, and 44 years for small dogs and cats? Most people that age are still in great health and have many healthy years to look forward to. Unfortunately, our little buddies age faster than we do and signs of disease in dogs and cats can be very subtle. Our goal here at Harbor Animal Hospital is to do all we can to help your pet live a long, happy, healthy, and comfortable life. In addition to the very thorough physical examination that we perform on all of our senior patients twice a year, we recommend routine diagnostic testing on a yearly basis to help with early detection of conditions that cannot be found with a physical exam. These tests are similar to those that physicians recommend for people over 40. Our veterinarians may recommend some or all of the following tests for your pet based on his or her breed, age, history, or physical exam findings.

A comprehensive blood profile and thyroid test are used to screen for problems such as kidney or liver disease, diabetes and other hormonal diseases, anemia, infections, and many other conditions. A urinalysis is critical to assessing kidney function and bladder infections and many other conditions. Chest x-rays are used to detect early signs of heart or lung disease. An electrocardiogram (ECG) tests for abnormal heart rhythms. Tonometry is used to screen “at-risk” patients for hypertension (high blood pressure).

Senior veterinary care has rapidly advanced over the last decade and we now have a wide array of products developed to help your older pet live, not only longer, but more comfortably. Diets and nutritional supplements can help with his or her changing needs. New anti- inflammatory medications can help alleviate discomfort from arthritis and back problems. We even have medications that can help with age-related senility.

Please call us to make an appointment for your senior pet. Let us help ensure your little buddy’s good health for many years to come!
