Dr. Kaufman Visits The Louisiana Bayou and Makes a New Friend!

For spring break this year I took my family to New Orleans to start our college visits for my youngest daughter.  Aside from partaking of the gastronomical delights, such as etouffee and Cafe du Monde’s beignets, we also took an air boat cruise on the bayou!  Fortunately it was the first warm day for a few weeks so we were lucky enough to see many large alligators out sunning themselves.  The guides even coaxed a few closer to the boat by tossing a couple of marshmallows into the water.  I doubt marshmallows are part of a normal alligator diet but they have been doing it for years and the gators don’t seem to be suffering.  While our attention was focused on a large gator nearby, our guide surprised us with a little baby he had on board the boat.  While I may be used to handling all sorts of lizards in the course of my work, this was the first time I actually had a gator in my hands.  Needless to say, we were all glad he chose to bring a baby along and not one of the big guys!  If you ever find yourself in Louisiana, I suggest you take one of these tours.  It is a beautiful and interesting ecosystem that is so different from anything we have around Los Angeles.
